William Maze Speaking on Drugged Driving

William Maze is a Michigan attorney who has been in practice since 1997. Originally from South Lyon, Michigan, he graduated from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, in 1992 with a BA in Political Science. He attended Wayne State University Law School from 1993-1996. After graduation, Mr. Maze briefly worked at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. While working at the Mackinac Center, he multi-stated the Michigan bar exam with the highest scores on his first attempt, and he was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan by the Midland County Circuit Court in December 1996. At that time, he began practicing law on a part-time basis under the Midland public defender while continuing to work on public policy issues.

Returning to the Metro Detroit area in 1997, Mr. Maze opened his own private law practice in Romulus, Michigan. Initially, this practice included criminal, family, and civil cases. As his practice grew, he began to hire employees and expand. He opened the Maze Legal Group at 37211 Goddard Road in Romulus in 2000.

In 2004, Mr. Maze joined the National College for DUI Defense as his practice gradually transformed into exclusively a criminal defense practice. He was certified in the Standardized Field Sobriety Test battery in 2005. He attended the National Criminal Defense College in Macon Georgia at Mercer Law School in 2006 and the Trial Practice College at Cooley Law School that same year.

Mr. Maze has been a long time member of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) as well as the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL). He was elected to the CDAM Board of Directors in 2011, and in 2014, Mr. Maze was elected to serve as the President of CDAM for the 2014-2015 term. William Maze, along with Attorney Josh Blanchard from Stanton, Michigan, are the founders of "Darrow" which brings together hundreds of criminal defense lawyers across the state.

Mr. Maze has testified on several occasions as an expert witness in breath testing and field sobriety testing. He has also publicly lectured on drunk driving, drugged driving, the SFST battery, Datamaster breath testing, criminal defense strategies and Freedom of Information Act litigation. A full copy of his curriculum vitae and professional resume is available online.

For a quarter of a century, William Maze has provided the highest quality of service to his clients. He has superb feedback and excellent ratings from his clients. He meets with his clients, provides detailed explanations of his strategies, and he always returns telephone calls. Once hired on to handle a case, he tenaciously fights for his client. Despite frequent battles with police officers, a large number of these officers refer their friends and family to Mr. Maze. As one client said, "She [the MSP Trooper] said you were a son-of-a-bitch, but she said you could help me." This applies to judges, too. As one judge said, "He walks drunks drivers. That's what he does. That's what he's paid to do."

B.A.

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina

It has been almost 30 years since I graduated from The Citadel. It was a remarkable experience, and I will be forever grateful to my parents for their encouragement and support.

"1988-1992"

J.D.

Wayne State University Law School

Located in Detroit, Wayne State University Law School is the best law school in Michigan for preparing lawyers to become practicing attorneys. Criminal procedure by Prof. Joseph Grano, constitutional law by Prof. Robert Sedler, and evidence by Prof. Ralph Slovenko have proven invalable to my practice over the years.

"1993-1996"

34th District Court in Romulus Michigan

As a Romulus attorney with an office in city since 1998, you can rest assured that I have a lot of experience in the 34th District Court. I regularly work with the Romulus prosecutor, the Van Buren prosecutor, the Belleville City Attorney, the Detroit Metro Airport authority, the Huron Township prosecutor, and the Sumpter Township attorney. I have had hundreds of motions and dozens of jury trials before the judges in the 34th District Court.

33rd District Court in Woodhaven Michigan

I regularly appear in the 33rd District Court in Woodhaven, Michigan. I have an active and busy practice in this court before all three of the judges.

35th District Court in Plymouth, Michigan

On average, I appear in the 35th District Court in Plymouth, Michigan, at least once a week. I have an active and busy practice in this court before all three of the judges.

Practice areas

Criminal Defense

I handle all felonies and serious misdemeanor cases. I also maintain an active practice challenging drug and asset forfeiture cases.

DUI Drunk Driving Defense

I am one of the most highly qualified and highly trained DUI defense attorneys in Michigan. I have been qualified as an expert witness by several courts in standardized field sobriety testing and breath testing.

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Litigation

I have had the honor and privilege to represent many of Michigan's most distinguished attorneys in FOIA litigation. In these cases, I am the lawyer's lawyer.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES & MEMBERSHIPS

These organizations represent just a fraction of my education, training, and experience that I have obtained over the last 20 years of legal practice. I have also attended numerous seminars and classes in a continuing effort to become a better lawyer and a better trial attorney.

I have been a member of the State Bar of Michigan since 1997.

I have been a member of the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan for several years. The Criminal Law Section is composed of judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys.

I have been a member of the American Bar Association over most of the last 20 years, but I have recently decided to permit my membership to lapse because the ABA does not offer enough in the area of criminal defense or criminal advocacy. I recently rejoined to explore my interest in cryptocurrencies and smart contracts. Cryptocurrencies refer to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other electronic forms of currency. Smart contracts refer to self-executing contracts that are automated through blockchain technology. Nonetheless, after rejoining the ABA, the ABA Technology Section never engaged in any activities. I was disappointed, since the ABA had hosted a seminar on cryptocurrencies last year.

I have been a member of the National College for DUI Defense (NCDD) since 2005. College members represent the most experienced DUI defense attorneys in the country. These are the top DUI practitioners in the United States, and I have been able to participate in some of the highest quality training and educational programs across the country as a result of my membership.

The Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, CDAM, is Michigan's largest statewide criminal bar association. CDAM offers seminars throughout the year as well as advanced training in courtroom skills and advocacy. I served on the Board of Directors and was later elected by the membership to serve as President from 2014-2015.

The Michigan Association for Justice, MAJ, is a network of attorneys who represent injured parties. They seek to promote a fair and effective justice system and support the work of attorneys in their efforts to ensure that any person who is injured by the misconduct or negligence of others can obtain justice in Michigan’s courtrooms, even when taking on the most powerful interests. MAJ offers some really great seminars and networking opportunities.

The Downriver Bar Association is a nonprofit organization consisting of attorneys, law students, and professionals that work in the legal field. Most of the members reside, have offices, or frequently work Downriver. In general, Downriver encompasses everything south of Detroit and north of Monroe County.

The Wayne County Criminal Defense Bar Association, WCCDBA, is the largest criminal defense bar organization in the Metro Detroit region.
